One of the scenes in the Peace Treaty Pageant is the cattle drive. This year the Moore Ranch near Bucklin, Kansas,
provided the longhorns. But instead of transporting the cattle by truck, the cowboys of the Moore Ranch drove the
cattle on horseback. The drive started on September 8th and took until September 13th to go the 65 miles to Medicine
Lodge. To go to the website, click on www.longhorn-cattle.com.
While the wagon train was waiting in the rodeo grounds, I walked into the pageant grounds to shoot more pictures.
There is a nice outcropping of red dirt with a few green cedar trees, that made a good area to set up my camera. Just by
coincidence, the cattle drive scene of the pageant was just about finished. The cowboys hearded the longhorns in the
direction of the gate, which happened to be to my back. I shot these pictures as the longhorns approached.
Something spooked the cattle and they started running right at me. It was probably just the cowboys making the
cattle run, but when they're coming right at you that's the least of your problems. I felt like I was right in the
middle of a stampede. I grabbed my camera and tripod, and turned around with my back to the cedar tree, facing away
from the longhorns. They split and went by me on each side. I kept on shooting pictures, in between shouting things
like "Oh my God!", and the longhorns passed right on by.
When the cowboys saw me out there, they broke out laughing so hard they almost fell off their horses. Here I was,
a city slicker, out there surrounded by longhorns, yelling "Oh my God!" and trying to take pictures. It was a pretty
funny sight to behold.
