PRESENTS

Yes, a lucky 13th rallye. The weather was just right, the cars ran well, nobody got lost, and we had a lot of fun. The Budweiser guest center was kind enough to open their doors early for our starting point. Let's take a look at some of the cars that ran the rallye.
In the pictures above, the 58 Magnette ZB was driven by Kingsley Meldrum. It's official now because our President actually used the term: the plural of Lotus is "Loti", and we've got a pair of Loti to prove it. The BMW has been in the Oil Spot before and I'm sorry I didn't get the owner's name--but we're glad to have you. The yellow 77 Midget belongs to Jim and Rita Powers of Ft Collins. Jim just rebuilt the 1500 engine 3 months ago. Rita is from England, and they were telling me a hilarious story about getting through a traffic jam on the way to Heathrow. Howard and Carol Stetser were listening in, and they had been in the exact same situation on their way to Heathrow. Howard and Carol have a 74 MGB in British racing green. The green MGB in the second row of pictures belongs to Pete Perea. Pete tells me his nagivator, or I guess that should be navigator, backed out and so Miles Wiltrout filled in, handling the road instructions. That greenish-blue Spitfire belongs to Tom St. Denis of Loveland. The first Morgan was driven by Jim Murray, and the Plus 8 behind it in the picture belongs to John Maloney. The interior is of the Maloney Morgan. The new Mini Cooper belongs to Wadene and Jim Hall.
Jim and Wadene served refreshments with help from Steve Burch, while Shawn gave the driver's meeting.
And they're off! The purple bug was driven by Carolyn and Calvin Lambert. If memory serves me right, the bug was blue when I saw them driving it through Leadville in the Glenwood Springs rallye! That's Howard and Carol Stetser in the 74 MGB with Sabrina bumper guards.
At checkpoint one, that's Russ & Lou Hall's Austin 100 parked on the side while they helped check times when cars came in. The TR7 Spider is Randy Woodland's. The red MGA is Russ & Deb Hulting talking to Paul Estock while Paul was getting his official time. The yellow Midget is Jim and Rita Powers, followed by Bill & Kathy See in their Ford Explorer. Their TR3 had a bad gas leak so they chose the safety of the Ford.
This picture was shot at the corner where the Carter Lake road crosses highway 34. That's Tom St. Denis' Spitfire. Tom is in the passenger seat and I'm sorry I didn't get the driver's name. In front of the Spitfire are Russ & Deb Hulting in their MGA.
Since my digital camera wasn't working, I wasn't able to use my 300mm lens and take pictures on the road.
At checkpoint 2 above, that's Randy Woodland again in the TR7 Spider. Then the pres and first lady check in the McKeon's TR6 while Mark looks for electrical fires. That's John Maloney's Plus 8 followed by Carolyn and Calvin in the purple bug, then the red BMW, and finally Werner and Helena in the black BMW. After that is Tom in the Spitfire and Jim and Rita in the Midget.
Checkpoint 3 was just a stop in the road designed to divert the driver's attention. You passed it on the left and then circled around to make the stop.
The final stop was the New Frontier Bank in Longmont. The bank has plenty of parking and a great conference room which we were happy to use. Out in the parking lot, passers-by stopped and looked at the cars, as it is common for our club to turn into an impromptu car show whenever we make a stop.
In the first picture, that's Tom St. Denis' Spitfire again, and the Ford Focus behind it belongs to Barb and Ray Kajoulsky (spelling?). They have run the Oil Spot Rallye and our August rallye in their Focus a few times now and are experts in Rallye rules. The third picture above is Paul & LaDonna's TR6. The white TR3 and red MGA belong to Will Smith. And of course, our pair of Loti. Can you guess which one is "Stickyfoot"? Below, that's Pete Perea's MGB, followed by Ron & Carrie Randolph's TR6, then two shots of the Maloney Morgan Plus 8. The last car is Tony Toffoli's GT6.
It's great to see the more obscure vehicles on the road, like Kingsley Meldrum's 1958 ZB Magnette.
Lunch was sub sandwiches, while Debbie, Linda and Wadene made a few announcements and the rallye masters tabulated the results.
The awards are given in the table below, by car number. In these pictures, Pete Perea picks out prizes that he won.
In these pictures, Dan Nanninga holds up the Oil Spot artwork while el presidente gives awards. Deb Hulting won for best Oil Spot while Tom St. Denis (right) won for most artistic Oil Spot.
In the pictures above, that's Craig Aiken with an award for running the rallye in a Mazda Speed Six, then Russ Hulting with their second award. John Maloney won the award for most senior driver, and the daughter of Kingsley Meldrum won for youngest navigator at 13 years old. Bill See won an award for running the rallye in their Ford Explorer.
Tom St. Denis won an award for best time, Bill See won another award, and that's Werner with an award.
