4H Trail Ride October 3, 2009

On October 3rd the 4H club had its campout and trail ride. Double-click each thumbnail to see a 5x3" picture. These pictures are reduced in order to transfer over the internet easier. If you'd like copies of the full-sized pictures (11x17" and suitable for printing) contact Janet Roland in Medicine Lodge.

This first set of pictures is from the beginning when everybody was getting their horses and equipment ready.
From the campsite, we went southeast through the small valley. The trees were just starting to turn and the Fall colors were just beautiful. That's my nephew Shawn Tillotson in the red parka, and I shot most of these pictures from the back of his hay wagon. Janet Roland is in these pictures too. Caution! You're going to be looking at the south end of a north bound horse!
In the picture on your left, that's Gene driving the second hay wagon.
After crossing the road, Shawn got the wagon up in front of the horses again. This was heading west through the valley.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost (1874-1963)
TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

At this point we reached a small ravine. Shawn pulled the wagon to the side to let the horses go through first.
Back on the trail again, some of the kids on horseback took shortcuts through the trees.
At this point on the trail, we went through a gate which took us out of the trees and valley, up onto the ridge.
This is the Magnuson ranch. Janet asked me to take a few pictures and then told me a few childhood stories of growing up there. The old house is still standing.
In the next series of pictures, you'll be able to pick out riders here and there among the trees, and in and around the buttes.
These are some action shots of the girls riding onto the top of the butte.
All of these pictures are from the ride up along the fence row to the top of the butte. In these thumbnails you won't be able to make out the individual riders, but after you double click to get the full-sized picture you'll be able to pick out riders here and there.
At the top of the butte, we rested a spell and took in the view. In the first row of pictures, you won't be able to make out the individual riders in the thumbnails. After you double click to get the full-sized picture you'll be able to find all the individual riders.
During the break at the top of the butte, several riders rode out on the top of the butte to see the view overlooking the valley.
At this point in the trail ride several riders started cutting down through the canyon while the wagons followed the road.
At the bottom of the long slope were a couple of lakes. We had fun crossing the dam of the second lake.
From this point on, we followed the fence row and the main road back to camp.
These last 2 pictures are of the hand dug well.
This is the end of my pictures of the 4H trail ride. I'd like to send out a big thank you to everyone involved. It was lots of fun and I hope to do it again sometime.
